Summer Camp Matters – Here’s Why

June 29, 2017Mallory

Even as an adult, the thought of summer bring a joyous, expectant, exhilarating feeling! For young people, this feeling is multiplied exponentially, and summer camp is the perfect opportunity to bring that excitement and expectation to life! This summer, with 3 locations, City Growers is on call to bring kids together, and outside and into nature.

Why? Because summer camp matters. For us, as adults, summer means maybe an extra Friday off, a long weekend, a ferry ride to the beach, or just, simply, watermelon and shorts! But for kids, summer carries this enormous promise. A promise of fun and freedom, exploration and imagination. A promise of water-soaked days and popsicles, friendships and ultimately, lifelong memories.

And summer camp matters to parents and caregivers. With limited camp ptions, it can mean burdensome days and weeks of juggling work, childcare and meals; your child’s reluctant return to school in September, after two months away from peers and falling behind on academics, as happens all too often due to summer learning loss. Or it can mean picking up exhausted kids at the end of a day of growth, not only physically but academically and socially, too. It can mean free summer meals and daily, enriching day care. It can mean a triumphant, confident return to the rigor of the classroom. In all these ways, summer camp matters.

And our society, in many ways, depends on young people who are given time to play, to get their hands dirty. It is these very young people who will inherit this Earth, and summer camp is just the right time of year to connect to the land, and to each other.
