After School Program Director
About the Position
The Program Director will be responsible, in partnership with other staff, for cultivating and maintaining a supportive and stimulating after school culture while fulfilling Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) required administrative work, maintaining all paperwork and materials in accordance with the DYCD ’s and City Growers’ policies and protocols. The Program Director must possess the ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. They will have previous experience providing supervision to staff. The Program Director will provide task supervision of all Activity Specialists and Group Leaders, offer guidance and support around lesson planning, facilitation, and behavior management, and facilitate weekly meetings. This individual will be comfortable building relationships with school administration, educators, community members, and parents to best support the needs of the program participants.
This Program Director will be able to make the connections for staff between the larger social inequalities that may affect program participants, and the impact these inequalities may have on lesson delivery and restorative discipline policies. This approach, adopted by the team, will aim to meet program participants where they are, while attempting to support any behavioral issues in a holistic way by turning incidents into conversations.
- Lead staff meetings; observe staff and provide feedback
- Supporting staff
- Ensuring participants maintain a 75% rate of participation
- Communication with families of participants, including weekly newsletter
- Serving as conflict manager among students
- Facilitating behavior management amongst participants
- Serving as conflict manager among students
- Acting as a liaison between City Growers and school community
- Recruiting participants and maintaining full enrollment
- Administrative tasks including:
- Entering attendance into DYCD Connect
- Maintaining staff records
- Maintaining records required by DYCD
- Lead weekly staff meetings
- Observe staff and provide feedback
Associate’s degree in child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation or a related field AND at least two years direct experience working with children under the age of 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
New York State Children’s Program Administrator Credential AND at least two years direct experience working with children under the age of 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
School Age Childcare Credential AND at least two years direct experience working with children under the age of 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
Two years of college with 18 credits in the above listed areas of concentration, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity AND two years direct experience working with children under the age of 13.
- Previous experience in afterschool, summer, or enrichment youth program
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Conflict Management Experience
- Reliable and punctual
- Familiarity with geography of NYC and public transit system
- Must be fingerprinted and undergo background check
- Must be certified in CPR Pro and Advanced First Aid (training opportunities are available)
- Some background in food, agriculture, STEM, and/or environmental science a plus
About the Program
This DYCD-funded COMPASS Explore after school program takes place at P.S. 20, a K-5 public school located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The program is available for 30 students in 3rd through 5th grade. The program’s overarching goal are to stimulate curiosity about the natural world; empower participants to become stewards of their bodies and their environment; and cultivate community engagement.
All program staff will function from the same belief that City Growers embodies in all of our programming: that each student is capable of achieving success and growing as an individual. The program’s overarching goals are to stimulate curiosity about the natural world, and to empower participants to become stewards of their bodies and their environment.
The Program Director will work part time when the position commences. Hours will increase incrementally approaching July, when the Program Director will transition into a full time position as Program Director of our 6-week summer camp program in the same location. The Program Director will report to the Program Supervisor. Though we cannot guarantee employment beyond August 16, 2019, for the right candidate we will be seeking possibilities to extend employment.
The after school program runs on the following days and times:
4/22/19-4/26/19 (Spring Break) 9:00am-5:30pm
4/29/19-6/26/19 (Monday-Thursday) 2:30-6:00pm
NO Program or School: 5/27/19, 6/4/19, 6/6/19, 6/11/19
Weekly staff meetings take place on Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 pm.
